Did you know the kidneys are associated with willpower? A strong kidney meridian is believed to give a person determination and the ability to overcome challenges.

The Kidneys & The Kidneys Meridian

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the "kidneys" are considered the root of congenital essence, encompassing the functions of multiple systems in the body.

The kidneys store essence, governing the growth and development of the body; they also produce marrow, promoting bone marrow growth and blood generation.

The kidneys control bodily fluids, transforming water into Qi to circulate throughout the body; they can also convert Qi into water, storing it in the bladder, and regulating the opening and closing of the bladder to excrete metabolized fluids from the body.

"Kidney Qi" and "Kidney Essence" refer to the functional status of these systems.

In Chinese medicine, it is believed that a person's will is dependent on essence and Qi, and it is noted that the five viscera house the spirit. Among them, the "kidneys govern willpower"; when the Kidney Essence is abundant and Kidney Qi is stable, a person's willpower and memory are stronger

Conversely, if the Kidney Essence is deficient and Kidney Qi is unstable, one may easily feel listless, lack confidence, be indecisive, experience memory decline, and even encounter issues like frequent urination, or scanty urine.

CK Tips

The Kidney Meridian is an important energy pathway in the body that coordinates Yin and Yang energies. When the Kidney Meridian is unobstructed, there is a balance of Yin and Yang, with ample Kidney Essence and stable Kidney Qi.

The Solar Terms, known as the You Shi(酉時)from 5PM to 7PM, is the time when the kidneys and Kidney Meridian are at their peak, and when the body's organs undergo metabolism and detoxification. It is also the optimal time to nurture the kidneys and Kidney Meridian, as well as to strengthen the body's detoxification system. Here are some health maintenance tips for daily well-being.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the kidneys and the color black are both associated with the element of water in the Five Elements theory. Therefore, consuming black foods nourishes the kidneys. During You Shi when having dinner, it is recommended to consume black foods such as black beans and black fungus.

For individuals with normal kidney function, consuming sea cucumber is beneficial. Sea cucumber is rich in collagen, which helps nourish Yin and enhance complexion. Additionally, it has the effects of tonifying the kidneys, benefiting essence, nourishing blood, and moisturizing dryness.

Keeping the lower back warm daily, taking light walks, and massaging the meridians and acupoints can help maintain the health of the kidneys and the Kidney Meridian.

It is recommended to press the following acupoints to help strengthen the function of the Kidney Meridian: the Yongquan acupoint(湧泉穴)located at the intersection of the crossroads of the foot's sole, the Shenshu acupoint(腎俞穴)located about two finger widths to the left and right of the spine, and the Taixi acupoint (太溪穴)located on the inner side of the foot, posterior to the inner ankle, in the depression between the inner ankle bone and the Achilles tendon.

Let Chong Kio guide you in syncing with your body’s natural cycles. Nurturing the kidneys is nurturing life itself. Your kidneys are the key to vitality—honor them with mindful care and intention.
